A sound understanding of Building Physics lies at the heart of all good construction details. Don’t just take someone’s word for it or trust what you read in the product manuals. Have your work independently reviewed to ensure it meets the performance requirements you relay upon and don’t end up with a problem by design.

Humidity, air flow and thermal energy drivers weave a complex web through a building’s envelope. Too often this is ignored and buildings end up cold, damp and mould ridden. This could have been easily avoided if the Building Physics was taken into account.

Our services are frequently called upon for clients wishing to have very low energy buildings, Certified Passive House buildings or those wanting to use unusual building materials in new or innovative ways. Our scope is also quite variable depending on the needs of the project and the performance outcomes and priorities set by the client.

Analysis Services we undertake include a suite of software packages that we use to simulate the overall building and review particular construction details:

  • Thermal analysis using iES : to determine specific heat energy demand, taking into account all component heat losses.
  • Isothermal analysis using Psi-Therm: to determine surface temperatures through junctions and thermal bridges. We can also calculate the thermal bridging coefficients that are to be included in the overall heat loss equation or your PHPP calculations. This also includes the analysis of window details.
  • Hygrothermal analysis using WUFI® and WUFI 2D: to evaluate the moisture vapour and heat energy movement through the layers of a building construction or connction. Analysis reports can be prepared in support of your Passive House design submission to the independent Certifier.

You can outsource your Passive House PHPP calculations to us so that you can avoid the number crunching, this is useful if you are out of practice or unfamiliar with the tool.

We also undertake on site Blower Door testing to determine the airtightness of a building. This is useful for quality assurance purposes and important for any energy efficient building project. Blower Door testing is mandatory for any Certified Passive House.

Additional services we can provide include desktop design reviews, on site construction monitoring to ensure building components are correctly installed, and review of existing buildings where retrofits are being considered.
